From Trash To Treasure Chest

A couple weeks ago I went a little crazy at the DI and bought up a bunch of stuff because there were several items that had potential (this little wooden box being one of them).

I've been seeing these really cute decorative cases all over places like Ross and Hobby Lobby. Retail they start around $10 for the small ones. Well I picked up this little diamond in the rough for $1. Score! So I put a coat of Minwax Dark Walnut Stain/Sealer on it and let it dry.

I also had this old duffle bag on hand that was falling apart. It hadn't reached the dumpster yet because my husband can't throw anything away. Well lucky for me it was still in his man room downstairs... cause I knew the handles would work perfectly.

I cut off the straps and handle and redid the stitching on them since that was coming undone. They were a little too plastic looking for my taste, so they needed a little somethin' somethin'. I tried a bit of the stain I used on the box which gave it this really cool old world look. But unfortunately it just sat on the top surface and wouldn't dry. (It did however stain the stitching which is really cool). Anyway, that attempt failed... so I wiped it off and just dabbed a bit of black paint on them and that seemed to work just fine. Once everything was dry, I used some super glue and thumb tacks ($1 for 300 at $ Tree) to mount the straps on the box. Once that was done, I sanded the tops of the thumb tacks and the latch and dabbed a little more black paint on them to make them look old. Voila! Total price of this bad boy was less than $2 since I already had everything on hand.
